Title of Project: First Aid for Little People Grade Level: Kindergarten and First Grade Number of Students Participating: Contributed by: Teacher: Ms. Berdine McNabney & Ms. Alicia Coyle School: St. Catherine of Siena District or County: Campbell Overview/Description of Project: Safety unit, Red Cross First Aid for Little People. The students study first aid principles, identify elements of a first aid kit and build a first aid kit for others. Goals: 1. Kindergarten and First Grade students will learn the primary elements in a First Aid Safety Kit and will be able to name and describe their uses. 2. The students will build first aid Safety kits in teams of two – three students and teach the older school children the components through an oral demonstration. Core Content Areas: Safety/Basic First Aid Tools; Universal symbols – Red Cross; choking; Art – creating the first aid bag; Oral communication skills STEP BY STEP GUIDE STEP 1: PREPARATION: The classes will complete the First Aid for Little People workbook. The teachers and students of the Kindergarten and First grade, in learning first aid safety concepts, brainstorm and list what materials are needed for a basic first aid kit. The children survey the other classes in their school to identify whether they are prepared to respond in an emergency. The teachers/students discover that no classes have a Safety Kit for the playground, on field trips or in case of emergencies such as Shelter in Place or Evacuation offsite. The classes decide to create first aid kits for these classes and to teach the older students about the uses of the kit. STEP 2: ACTION IN SAFETY CLASS: The classes use their listing activity to sort first aid materials previously acquired. The children list the missing materials and create a note to take home listing needed items and a due date to provide the remaining materials. In MATH class, the students will add the cost of the items to identify the cost of each kit with the help of their older Buddy (fourth/fifth graders). In ART class, the students will review the international symbol for the Red Cross and paint a red cross (on the front) and their handprint (on the reverse) of a canvas bag. Children will also create safety artwork that depicts how to use the materials (a person putting on a bandaid, etc.) In SAFETY/HEALTH class, the students will assemble the materials into the canvas bags. Next they practice their oral presentations by using the kit. This demonstration may include defining the use for key materials in the kit; demonstrating the universal sign for choking; explaining the first rule of First Aid- Stay Calm ( STOP – THINK – ACT); etc. as the students and teachers choose. STEP 3: REFLECTION The students will orally reflect upon their learning in class. The students will draw pictures about Safety to demonstrate knowledge. The students will use their team presentation time to reflect upon what two-three parts of the kit are most important to describe/demonstrate for the older students. The Kindergarten/First graders will present the kits and oral demonstrations to the older classes and answer questions. Volunteer adults or teachers will photograph/videotape the presentations. STEP 4: CELEBRATION: At a later date, volunteer parents will create a Safety Celebration in the classroom with the children’s safety art on display along with any photos/videotape of the project taken. The principal or service learning coordinator will present each child with a Good Neighbor Safety Certificate at the party. |
