Title of Project: Expressive Reading Grade Level: Special Ed 6-8 Number of Students Participating: 50 Contributed by: Teacher: Jennifer Area School: Twenhofel District or County: Kenton Overview/Description of Project: Special Ed students with low reading scores will practice expressive reading skills with children’s books. The students will then take a field trip to a neighboring elementary school and read their chosen book to either a preschool or kindergarten class. Goals: -For students to practice and improve their reading skills -For students to become active thinking readers and improve their expressive reading skills Core Content Areas: (teacher completes this section)
PARC MODEL STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE STEP 1: PREPARATION 1) Students will look at a variety of children’s books and pick one to read to the children 2) Students will practice reading their books aloud using expressive reading skills 3) Students will practice reading in front of a video karaoke machine so that they can see and hear themselves read STEP 2: ACTION The students will be broken up into five groups of 10 and will visit five different elementary schools and read their chosen book to the preschool or kindergarten students using the practiced expressive and active reading skills. STEP 3: REFLECTION ( Reflection is not sequential; rather it is encouraged throughout the lesson) Students will do self and class reading evaluations from the read alouds and the Karaoke activity. In addition students will debrief after the field trip to reflect on their reading performance. STEP 4: CELEBRATION Photo's were displayed outside classroom |
