Overview/Description of Project:

The fifth grade advanced math class will take the proceeds from a school fundraiser and make care packages for the schools family resource center for the Holidays. In preparation for this the class will do research on products that should be in the package and come up with a budget to purchase these products.

Goals:

Students will learn budgeting skills

Students will learn how to compare products, both quality and price

Students will learn about the importance of helping others

Core Content Areas:

Mathematics: 1.1.2, 1.2.2 Students will use math skills to determine the amount of care packages to be made and the amount of money that can be spent on each care package.

Practical living, consumerism: 3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.2.1 Students will research items needed to fill the care packages and come up with a budget to purchase those items

PARC MODEL STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

STEP 1: PREPARATION

1) The class will discuss the important of helping others and why these families need help 2) Students will come up with a list of possible items to include in the care package 3) Students will research and compare products for the care packages 4) students will come up with a budget for purchasing items

STEP 2: ACTION

1) Students will purchase items for care packages 2) Students will assemble care packages and give them to the Family Resource Center

STEP 3: REFLECTION

Students discussed the need for doing this project and why it is important to help those in their community. Students respond to open ended questions in regards to this project and/or keep a journal in for this project. The students developed a budget. The students made cards to include in the package.
