Title of Project: Bully Be Gone! Grade Level: 3-5 Number of Students Participating: Contributed by: Teacher: Jennifer Maines School: Sixth District Elementary District or County: Covington Independent Schools Overview/Description of Project: Students in the Leadership Program of Sixth District, after listing various problems in their school community, decided to draw up an attack plan to reduce bullying in their school. Goals: To educate students on how to deal with bullies and how not to be a bully. To increase confidence levels and presentation skills. Core Content Areas: PL-E-1.1.2 There are positive ways to express feelings during conflicts at home, school, and in the community. PL-E-1.1.3 Groups function more effectively when members follow certain behaviors (e.g., conflict-resolution strategies, problem identification, communication). PARC MODEL STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE PREPARATION: The fifth grade students of the leadership program researched bullying and developed a survey for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders to fill out based on facts they researched Questions included: Do you know a bully? Do you think bullying is a problem at Sixth District? What do you do if you are bullied? Etc The students took the information and designed an attack plan to tackle bullying at Sixth District Students aggregated all of the information and made PowerPoint slides with statistics, definitions of bullying, etc Students filmed situations and made an I-movie of 4-5 skits and students made bullying posters with tips to give to the younger classes ACTION: The group presented the information they gathered and their attack plan to younger grades at Sixth District Students defined bullying and noted the difference between bullying and bossing The group allowed the younger students to determine whether the skits they made were incidents of bullying and gave them tips from their research regarding what to do when one is bullied The group presented the classes with the bullying posters they made and with “I Can Handle Bullies” coloring books Students are attempting to get a donation of a tree for the playground. The tree would be called the Peace Tree. It would be an area that students could go to work through their problems. REFLECTION: Students had lunch with their advisor, Ms. Maines, to talk about their project; what they were nervous about and what they felt would go really well Students constantly critiqued their presentation and made it better each time they did it Students recapped after all the presentations what went well and what they wanted to do better next time CELEBRATION: Students received “You Did It” coupons that entitled them to a free meal at Ryan’s to celebrate their accomplishments. Ms. Maines also plans to take them to the capital building in Frankfort, KY so they can see leadership at it’s best in Kentucky
