Title of Project: Alphabet Body Book Grade Level: 5th Number of Students Participating: 28 Contributed by: Teacher: Rachel Stoehr School: Ryland District or County: Kenton County Overview/Description of Project: After gymnastics lesson in health class the 5th grade students create books for the kindergarten classes that incorporate the letters of the alphabet using their bodies. Goals: -To help students learn about the importance of balance, cooperation, flexibility and body awareness Core Content Areas: PL-05-2.1.1 Students will apply fundamental motor skills: locomotor and non-locomotor: PL-05-2.1.2 Students will apply fundamental movement concepts: - Body awareness - What the body is doing - Space awareness - Where the body moves - Time - How quickly the body moves - Effort - How the body moves - Relationship - Relationships that occur while the body moves PL-05-2.2.1 Students will explain how physical and social benefits that result from regular and appropriate participation in physical activities. Writing and technology skills will be used to create the book PARC MODEL STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE STEP 1: PREPARATION -Teach gymnastics lesson in gym class -Introduce book idea and have students develop a step-by-step plan in executing the project, how to form letters, size of book, captions/basic health and fitness terms to include with each letter, how to assemble and bind the book -Students will come up with health/fitness terms for each letter -Students will practice letterforms for book STEP 2: ACTION -With the assistance of the gym teacher and photographer, the students will form letters with their bodies and will be photographed for the book -With the help of the technology/computer teachers the students will type health/fitness terms on the computer to include with the photographs -Students will assemble the photographs and terms into a book for the Kindergarten classes STEP 3: REFLECTION ( Reflection is not sequential; rather it is encouraged throughout the lesson) -Students will come up with health/fitness terms for each letter in the book -Students will practice letter forms for book -Students will participate in-group discussion about skills needed to form letters STEP 4: CELEBRATION -Students will share the books with the kindergarten classes and demonstrate the skills they learned |
